A kitchen assistant is a key member of the kitchen team, working under the direction of the head chef. The kitchen assistant is responsible for organizing and coordinating daily kitchen activities, assisting with menu creation, inventory management, supervision of food preparation and cooking, and management of the kitchen team. The second in charge must be able to take responsibility for cooking in the absence of the head chef.

Key responsibilities:

  • Help create menus based on customer tastes, production costs and seasonal products
  • Manage food stocks and orders for products needed to prepare dishes
  • Supervise the preparation and cooking of food to ensure the quality and presentation of dishes
  • Manage and supervise the kitchen team to ensure productivity and quality of work
  • Ensure compliance with food hygiene and safety standards
  • Assist in the management of the kitchen budget by ensuring that production costs are managed effectively
  • Assume responsibility for cooking in the absence of the chef

Skills required:

  • Excellent cooking skills and creativity for menu design
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and government food hygiene regulations
  • Ability to effectively manage a team and maintain a positive work environment
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with kitchen staff and customers
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage peak periods successfully
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively with the chef

Education and experience required:

  • Diploma in cooking or equivalent experience in the culinary field
  • Experience working in a commercial kitchen
  • Kitchen team management experience

Remuneration:

The hourly rate for a Kitchen Assistant varies according to geographic region and experience. On average, the rate used by Onestaff's partner establishments is €20.00 excluding tax/hour.
