A retail fishmonger is a professional working in a retail environment, such as supermarkets, shopping centers, or chain restaurants. Retail fishmongers are responsible for preparing, presenting and selling seafood products for store customers. The position requires expertise in the fish business, great attention to detail, and an ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
Main responsibilities:
- Receive fish and seafood deliveries, sort and store them properly.
- Prepare fish and seafood according to customer requests, using appropriate filleting, peeling, trimming, and cutting techniques.
- Maintain the quality and freshness of products while respecting food safety and hygiene standards.
- Advise customers on the different types of fish and seafood, their characteristics and their culinary uses.
- Create attractive and appetizing product presentations, using staging and decorating techniques.
- Manage administrative tasks related to the fish store, such as timesheets, expense reports, and supply orders.
- Clean and maintain fish equipment, including sales counters, cutting tools, and processing machines.
- Respond to customer requests regarding food allergies and intolerances.
Skills required:
- Expertise in fish shops and previous experience in fish shops.
- Knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards.
- Ability to work in a fast and dynamic environment.
- Organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively with other staff members.
- Good physical condition for standing work and for lifting heavy loads.
- Ability to adapt to flexible hours.
Education and experience required:
- A fish trading degree is not required to become a retail fish dealer, however, prior experience in the fish business is essential. Food safety and hygiene training may also be required.
Remuneration:
The hourly rate of a Fishmonger varies according to the geographical region and experience. On average, the rate used by Onestaff's partner establishments is €18.00 excluding tax/hour.
