A baggage handler is a hotel and restaurant employee whose main job is to assist customers with their luggage. They are responsible for handling customers' luggage, transporting it to their room or vehicle, and storing it safely. Baggage handlers usually work in hotels, airports, train stations, and beach resorts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Greet customers and help them with their luggage.
  • Load and unload customers' luggage from vehicles.
  • Transport customers' luggage to their room or storage location.
  • Respond to customer questions about hotel facilities and local attractions.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the hotel's luggage storage and arrival areas.
  • Report lost or damaged baggage to the appropriate authorities.
  • Work with other hotel staff to ensure that guest needs are met.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by hotel management.

Skills and qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift heavy loads and work under demanding physical conditions.
  • Knowledge of baggage handling techniques.
  • Knowledge of baggage and customer security procedures.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and solve problems quickly.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Basic computer knowledge for the use of baggage management software.

Education and experience required:

A high school diploma or equivalent is generally required for this position. Previous experience as a baggage handler or in the hotel industry is an asset. Training can be provided in-house, but some businesses prefer baggage handlers to have a certificate or degree in hotel management or tourism.

Remuneration:

The hourly rate for a Porter varies according to geographic region and experience. On average, the rate used by Onestaff's partner establishments is €16.00 excluding tax/hour.
